N

oella is a mother to two beautiful kids. She agrees with us when we say that the quarantine has NOT exactly meant having a relaxing vacation at home. Like most parents, she is juggling between ensuring that the family eats well, gets enough exercise, making sure all the piano lessons and the soccer practices are still on the kids’ schedule, even if they all need to happen in the backyard now, while cooking, cleaning and planning birthday celebrations in lock-down.

As she attempts not to panic when her children attend their school classes through zoom calls, she says “it is okay, we are in this together".

In this case, who she is “in this together” consists of not only her family, husband and children but the 346 girls who are studying in Malaika, a phenomenal multi-dimensional educational facility she built in the Democratic Republic of Congo, 13 years ago. Malaika provides free primary and secondary education covering programs such as STEM and coding to art, music, theater and sports.

Together means all the nurses, mothers, teachers and community members that have stayed committed to serve during the current COVID-19 crisis, by sewing and distributing masks, soaps, food and other necessities, while educating everyone about sanitation.

Together means every Mailaka staff member, friend, donor, supporter and volunteer who stand on guard to support the Malaika students and their community in this time of crisis.

Noella lost her father when she was just 5 years old and was separated from her mother not too long after that because her mother could not support her since she had no education or financial resources. It was coming back to Congo and her mother, after 13 years of almost no contact, that she committed herself to making a difference.

From starting a career in modeling to becoming an advocate for girls’ education, her work has been addressed in the World Economic Forum, Harvard, the UK parliament, Forbes, BBC and many more.

Noella cannot be defined any of her roles but perhaps by her Benevolent soul.
